Get travel insurance
Make note of the nearest consulate or embassy to your destination
Invest in a money belt or something similar for around the waist or neck
Set up “lost phone” capability in your smart phone if available
Use the Cloud to store everything on your phone, pay that fee!
Do not wear glasses in the passport photo
Make photocopies of your passport, drivers license and credit cards– carry at least 2 copies with you to store in different locations within your belongings during the stay. Give copies to a trusted travel companion
Keep copies of your itinerary also in separate locations
Divide credit cards into two separate locations, after you reach your destination
Do not keep credit cards in checked bags, ever!
Do not carry every piece of identifying documentation and payment methods in the only one place.
Give digital versions of passport and drivers license to someone who is not also traveling so they can email the documents if needed
Use a hotel safe if available
Have a second email address to verify your identity with online purchasers and apps, not just verification via phone
When talking to a security officer note the person’s name and badge #
Keep any medications in your travel on, and get refills before you travel if running low on anything
Do not travel with anything you’d be broken hearted to lose, unless necessary
When traveling with a companion, consider sharing clothing among both suitcases
Other ideas I picked up from other travelers after I’d arrived back home –
Enroll in the U.S. State Department’s Smart Traveler Program (STEP) – in case of emergencies.
Look for undergarments with zippered compartments!
Addition on June 12, 2022 – get that replacement passport as soon as you get home! You never know when the next global travel opportunity may arise!
